About My STM Laboratory

The STM Lab is located in the H-Cross block of the IISER campus, a facility meticulously designed to accommodate advanced experimental physics laboratories. This state-of-the-art block has been developed with a focus on supporting cutting-edge research. Key features of the H-Cross block include:

  • Uninterrupted Power Supply: Ensures consistent and reliable energy for high-precision equipment, minimizing downtime and enhancing experimental accuracy.
  • Vibration Isolation Areas: Specially engineered zones to reduce vibrations, creating an optimal environment for experiments that require extreme sensitivity and stability.
  • Custom-Built Interiors: Each lab space is tailored to meet specific research needs, incorporating ergonomic designs, advanced safety protocols, and adaptable layouts for diverse experimental setups.

These features reflect IISER's commitment to fostering world-class research and providing the ideal infrastructure for groundbreaking discoveries.

Mission Statement for STM Lab

The progressive world needs new technologies that support modern societies' increasing needs. Basic science research drives the technological requirements of knowledge about different materials. We believe that our efforts to understand physics at the atomic scale will lead to a contribution to Indian science and technology.

The lab houses two major instruments

  • Omicron STM: Operating in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) and at low temperatures (LT), 77 K and 4.2 K (UHV-LT-STM), this instrument is dedicated to STM, spectroscopy, and atom and molecule manipulation experiments at 77 K and 4.2 K.
  • Nanosurf Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and STM: Tabletop models designed for projects at room temperature (300 K) and in ambient environments.
